After a morning spent catching up on mundane chores and more unpacking, Matilda needed an outing. Sarnies were made, fruit packed into a box and drinks popped into my trusty Cath Kidston rucksack, we jumped into the car and headed to a nearby National Trust property Wimpole Hall and Farm.
We didn't actually get to visit the hall itself as upon entering the property she immediately spotted the tractor waiting to whisk us down to the farm. A traditional farmyard filled with beautiful looking animals our particular favourites were the magnificent Shire horses, a protected rare breed nowadays with only 1500 female horses currently in the UK, and the two huge Old Spot Gloucester pigs. Also fascinating to watch were the bees making honey, I struggled to drag Matilda away as she proudly explained the process.
The play area for children is fantastic with a tall straw maze, a tractor climbing frame with slide and countless mini tractors available to be used. With picnic tables and a well stocked cafe serving wonderful cakes and delicious homemade ice cream, this is a perfect spot to keep the children entertained and give adults a chance to catch up on some reading. Though in my case a little work.
We'll definitely be back over the Summer holidays, next time we'll explore the Hall itself and its gardens as well as the glorious walks. We're looking forward to a lot more fun at Wimpole!
